Traveling With Kids: Part I

by Staff Writer

Traveling with children can be a challenge, particularly in the preparation and road/air travel phase. I will be posting a series of several posts today which includes Tips for Packing, Traveling By Air, Traveling On The Road, and Snack Ideas. These are brought to you courtesy of the Family Fun Message Boards.

Part I: Tips for Packing

PACKING

A little planning and organization can smooth the way, as these ideas from the FamilyFun message boards attest.

1. EXTRA BAG Make sure you pack a small empty duffle into one of your bigger suitcases for all of the souvenirs you’ll be bringing back. — A Stay-at-Home Mom

2. THREE-DAY BAG One difficulty traveling with a family making one-night stops is the luggage. If each person has his own suitcase, you end up taking ALL the baggage into the hotel each night. SOLUTION: Pack a “three-day bag,” into which each traveler contributes three days’ worth of clothes. This way you only have to take in ONE suitcase. Then, three days later, you take in a different suitcase! This works great for long road trips. And you can make “two-day bags” or whatever suits your needs. (Special note: I do not see this working for teenagers, but for my 2-year-olds and my neighbor’s 4-year-old and 3-year-old, it works out great!) — C_Ogg

3. BATHROOM BAG Our family has what we call our “Bathroom Bag,” an overnight case that we all use. We put things like toothbrushes, paste, shampoo, hairbrushes, makeup, medicine, etc., in Ziploc bags that go into the overnight case, which even has room for a hairdryer and curling iron, so my grandaughter was happy to stay with us this summer when we went to Disney — nothing had to be left behind. — katyfay

4. DON’T FORGET THE TABLECLOTH! Pack an outdoor tablecloth and clothespins. It folds easily and takes very little space in your luggage, plus it has many uses. If a motel has not-so-great blinds or curtains, clip the tablecloth over the window to block out the early-morning sunshine. It’s also nice to spread out on the floor in case the kids want to play and it isn’t too clean. Also, if you eat in the room, use it protect the furniture (or comforters) from spills and stains. — BAlieceHall
