Oregon is famous for the ski slopes found around the state, and if you are planning a ski vacation, you should definitely consider Timberline Lodge, located near Mt. Hood in Oregon. The top elevation at Timberline Lodge is 8504 with a vertical drop of 2501. There are six chair lifts to accommodate skiers.

Before you think I’m off my rocker suggesting ski vacations at the beginning of summer there’s something you should know. One of the most unique things about Timberline is that it’s the one place in the United States that offers year-round snow skiing. Palmer Snowfield is part of the Timberline Resort, and it’s permanently covered with snow. Be advised that beginners are’nt always allowed on Palmer snowfield – the conditions are considered each day when making the determination.

Skiing, snowboarding, hiking, snowshoeing, and lodge tours are the main attractions at Timberline. Here, it is all about the powder! Mt. Hood is an active volcano which is considered to be dormant. Occasionally, tremors are felt, and steam vents are often visible. The Cascade Dining Room is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, but the hours do change with the seasons. Other fare can be found at the Ram’s Head Bar, the Blue Ox bar, the Wy’East
Kitchen Cafeteria, the Market Café, and the Mt. Hood Brewing Company.

The downside is that rental equipment isn’t available at Timberline. You must bring your own. However, smaller items such as gloves and goggles can be purchased at the lodge, along with some clothing items. There is a snowboard and ski school on the premises, with private and group lessons are available.

If the idea of a ‘rustic’ ski vacation appeals to you, as opposed to trips with accommodations that are a bit fancier, then Timberline Lodge in Oregon is the place to be. Again, it’s definitely all about the history and the powder here. It is short - just a few minutes long but is one of the overlooked treasures of Walt Disney World. It can be seen from the beaches of the Grand Floridian and Polynesian and the Fort Wilderness Marina and Beach.

There are many miles of trails at Fort Wilderness, through pine and cypress woods. All free. You can hire bikes but to walk costs nothing.

On Lake Maitland there was an alligator cave from which 150 alligators were removed into the Florida Everglades to prevent a rather dangerous collision between local wildlife and civilization.

Along the Venetian Canal, variegated ginger and banana trees dot the landscape near the arched Palmer Avenue Bridge. Philodendrons, palm grass, bamboo, a plant called firespikes and an interesting arrangement of “air potatoes”, round tubers hanging down from a tree branch, adorned our journey through the canal.

At 450 acres and 30 feet deep, Lake Maitland is the largest of the 3 lakes covered by the boat tour. A dam controls the water level and interestingly, the lakes all drain northwards into the St. John’s River which flows into the Atlantic near Jacksonville. The Kraft Azalea Gardens, located on Lake Maitland on Alabama Drive off Palmer Avenue, feature thousands of azaleas, tropical shrubs and trees. Azaleas are in full bloom January through March.

Several mansions lakeside have been used as backdrops in various movies and commercials. Lake Maitland also features several small islands with rather naked looking trees that house colonies of cormorants, fishing birds that consume up to a pound of fish a day.

Further exploration takes you to the beautiful city of Winter Park. The Scenic Boat Tour, a Winter Park institution for almost 70 years now, is located at the end of Morse Avenue on the shores of Lake Osceola. 6. If oxygen masks are deployed, put yours on first. Contrary to what most parents would think, it is much advisable to put an adult’s mask first before their child. Why? For practical reasons. Saving both lives is more likely. If the adult puts the oxygen mask on their children first, it only takes few seconds to be overcome by hypoxia, followed confusion, or passing out. A child, especially smaller ones, will be of no help once you pass out. That‘s why you put your mask on first.
7. Always be prepared for the possibility of emergencies. Be aware of the procedures that can be appropriate for your child. First, ask the flight attendant if they have emergency equipments that are designed especially for children. Next, be familiar with the preflight briefing. Lastly, if your child has a condition that can be an issue, inform the attendant.
