San Diego - Sea World

Sunday, December 31st, 2006

When I traveled to California with my parents at about the age of 11, one of my favorite attractions was Sea World. I must say, I even liked it better than Disneyland. As a Montana girl, the main thing California had to offer (other than Sea World) was its weather, which to me was divine! So balmy!

I was looking at travelocity today and found a hotel that I thought might be of interest to some of you California-bound travelers. It isn’t particularly fancy, but let’s face it: When we’re traveling with children we are looking for location, function, and price. With rooms starting around $60, this is the least expensive hotel I’ve found near Sea World. Keep in mind that the Goodnight Inn does not offer a dining room, fitness center, or swimming pool. As for that pool issue…Isn’t that what the ocean is for???

From travelocity.com:

Boulder, Colorado Hotel for Free?!

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

harvest-house.jpg

From Travelzoo comes this amazing deal for a Boulder, Colorado hotel. This is a great chance to take advantage of all the winter activities in Colorado. (and a little known fact is that my husband and I got to know each other in Boulder…at this very hotel where we were staying on business…so there just HAS to be good juju there, right?)

Boulder, Colorado, named “All-Around Winner: Best Outside Towns” by Outside Magazine and described as “sophisticated and artsy” by Frommer’s, is a popular destination year-round. If those aren’t reasons enough for a visit, here’s another: Stay at the Millennium Harvest House - Boulder for only $100 per night and receive a $100 per night credit for meals and drinks at the hotel. You are practically staying for FREE!

This offer is valid 7 days a week from November 10-January 25, including the holiday periods (you can even stay New Year’s Eve). Blackout Dates: January 11-13.

Set on 16 landscaped acres alongside Boulder Creek, the hotel has a fitness center, indoor and outdoor pools, whirlpools, a basketball court and tennis courts. Bike rentals are also available for the Boulder Creek Path. Use your $100 per night credit at the hotel’s popular restaurants and bars — including Thyme on the Creek, Coaches Corner Sports Bar, Fullers Cigar Bar — or on room service.

Book by Nov. 24: Call the hotel directly at 1-800-545-6285 or Millennium Hotel’s central reservations number at 866-866-8086 and mention promotion code ZOO, or click here to book online. (To find out more about the hotel, click here, but be sure to use the first link when booking online.)

For some ideas of things to do while you are in Boulder, be sure to visit The Colorado Review, getboulder.com for a list of activities to do with kids and teens, and ski central for ideas of places to ski within proximity to Boulder.

Have fun!

Trip Bargain Websites, New York City & More

Monday, November 13th, 2006

new-york.jpg

From Newsweek, here is a list of fifteen websites to help find travel bargains. Click here to see the article. I have mentioned a few on the list like Trip Advisor and Site 59, but there are a few that may lead you to your dream destination for less money.

Big cities can be expensive, especially this time of year. Yet, many people love the allure of cities like New York around holiday time. For frugal travelers, check out the Newsweek article on exploring New York City on a budget.

I remember traveling as a teenager with my family. Although important, it can be difficult to keep them happy. (and boy do they let you know it!) Families with teens, click here to see an article on hotels with teen concierges that can make your trip go a little smoother by catering to your teen. There is also a link on there for a complete list of hotels with teen concierges.

United Airlines Fare Sale

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

united.jpg

United Airlines has been having some pretty incredible fares lately. (It makes you want to start humming George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” when I say “United”, doesn’t it?) I just got a wonderful fare for my son and me to go to Disney World from Sacramento to Orlando for just about $200 round trip. I had to play with the dates somewhat, but I got a terrific deal.

You can do the same! If you tinker with their website online, you may find some excellent deals from your city, particularly if you depart and return on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. For example, fly between San Francisco, CA and Charlotte, NC for only $79 each way! That is spectacular.

To search for that particular fare, do the following:

1. Click here to book online directly with United.
2. Enter your cities (San Francisco - SFO, Charlotte - CLT). Select your departure and return dates.
3. Click the “Check” button.
4. Fares will be listed roundtrip, and include all taxes and fees.

They also have some excellent deals from Oakland, CA to Orlando, FL for only $99 each way. In fact, I initially starting searching that city of departure since I thought it was discounted much more than Sacramento, CA. However, to depart from Sacramento, CA to Orlando only cost a bit more. So be persistent, and you might find a fare that makes you extremely happy!

Hurry, fares this inexpensive have limited availability, and your dates may be gone soon.

Looking for Some Holiday Season Memories in the Midwest?

Saturday, November 4th, 2006

wolf-lodge.jpg

Don’t bother to check with your local meteorologist for winter weather forecasts this year. At Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, weather prognosticating requires no advanced degree: Always 84 degrees in the indoor waterparks.

This prediction is especially appealing considering December marks the start of the annual holiday tradition, Snowland. The resort is transformed into a winter wonderland of magical decorations and activities, happy holiday gift-making in the Cub Club, and real snow in the Grand Lobby.

You can enjoy all of the following with the kids: Story Time with Rowdy the Reindeer, Secret Santa Station, Polar Bear Race, Holiday Carol Sing-Along, Santa’s Arrival & Tree-Lighting, Door Decorating Contest, Writing Depot, and the Grand Lobby Snow Show!

And, of course, time alone as a family.

This offer is valid from December 2 through December 26. The package includes:

Suites starting at $129
Four waterpark passes for your entire stay
Four passes to Wiley’s Woods

Use promo code SNOWLAND when booking.

Washington D.C. with Kids: 16 Great Ideas

Sunday, October 29th, 2006

dcwashington.jpg

Washington D.C., our nation’s capital, is a gorgeous area with a thousands of great restaurants and things to do. However, I have only been there as an adult traveling with another adult. I can name off tons of great “un”friendly places to take children, like long leisurely dining places. In fact, if you are going with older children or without children, I highly recommend the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. My husband and I went here a couple years ago, and it was the most moving and educational museum I have ever encountered.

However, since I do have very young children now and this is a site geared to families, I asked my new friend, Jon, over at The DC Traveler, to help. Jon sent me a list of suggestions and things to do, especially with families in mind.

1) Remember to keep museum visits short based on the kid’s ages, attention spans and interests.

2) The always kid-favorite Natural History museum can keep the attention of just about any kid (and adult too). Dinosaurs, insects, the Hope Diamond and lots of special activities for kids in the Discovery Room, Insect Zoo and Naturalist Center are sure to delight the little ones.

3) Ride the elevator to the top of the Washington Monument to get a bird’s eye view of the Mall area and city.

4) The Air & Space museum is still considered among the “really cool” Smithsonian museums by most kids. Space ships, planes and rockets and even a moon rock to touch memorize most children.

5) The National Archives holds the Declaration of Independence the kids have hopefully studied about in school and it usually takes less than an hour to tour.

6) I’d recommend avoiding the art museums with young kids. That way they don’t get bored and crabby looking at the 153rd presidential portrait.

7) Take advantage of all the parks and open areas around the National Mall. Let the kids run around once in a while as you relax and enjoy lunch under a tree near a monument.

8) Rent bikes and tour the Mall. Even kids as young as 4 can be put on a tandem trailer or carriage behind your bike. Check out Bike the Sites for rentals.

9) If kids are at least 16 years old, take a tour of the Mall on a Segway 2-wheeled transporter. Your kids will think you are the coolest…not to mention being able to brag to their friends back home about their experience. Plus, it’s a really fun way to tour the Mall and get your introductory bearings.

8) Outside the Smithsonian “Castle” on the National Mall is the Carousel on the Mall. Take the kids for a ride and enjoy some cotton candy.

9) Near the Jefferson Memorial in the Tidal Basin you can rent a paddle boat. Kids seem to love these boats. Just remember to tell them to start by heading INTO the wind, otherwise you might have to carry them the rest of the day.

10) Take them to the Baltimore Aquarium, about an hour away in downtown Baltimore. It’s one of the best aquariums in the country and offers dolphin shows, along with a hands-on ray petting pool. And what kid doesn’t like visiting Nemo and Dory?

11) Pandas anyone? The National Zoo has a couple playful pandas - Mei Xiang and Tai Shan, not to mention an extensive collection of animals, reptiles and birds.

12) Watch as money is printed at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. Kids seem to get a kick over seeing millions and millions of dollars just a few feet a way.

13) Feed the ducks and birds at the Reflecting Pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

14) Make a game out of quizzing the kids to see what they remember from each destination. Where do penguins live? Who first signed the Declaration of Independence? Who’s the toughest dinosaur on the block?

15) Get tickets to a DC sporting event. During most seasons, you might be able to find one the major pro sports team playing - baseball, football, hocke, basketball or soccer. Check out the box team’s office, a local ticket brokers or criagslist.org for tickets.

16) Finally, get each kid a disposable camera and let them capture their own memories of their trip to DC.

Fred Malek loves Washington DC baseball. I am deeply gratified to have played a role in bringing baseball to DC, and I’m pleased that the Nats are in the hands of strong local owners.
