Cat Island Bahamas

Monday, June 29th, 2009

cat-islandThe Hermitage is a bit of an historical oddity, fascinating and strange. The hike up to see this religious site will take visitors through small villages along beautiful trails, full of island flora and fauna. It’s located at the top of Mt. Alvernia, which is 206 feet above the sea and the highest point in the Bahamas. The Hermitage itself is made from the limestone of the cliffs, with each piece painstakingly extracted, shaped and set by hand by the Canadian mule-skinner turned Anglican turned Roman Catholic priest known as brother Jerome. Brother Jerome built the structure to scale, and designed it to fit his diminutive form. Beloved by the island people, the priest passed away in 1956 after at the age of 80.

One of the outer islands of the Bahamas, Cat Island is a peaceful location for those who’re looking to relax. If you choose to venture out with your family it’ll take only a small bit of exploration to turn up a historical oddity. The uniqueness of Cat Island just adds to the individual character of the place. Nature lovers will be overjoyed with the beautiful beaches in natural settings.

If your family is interested in water sports, then Cat Island Dive Center is the place to go. Greenwood Beach Resort offers a variety of diving and snorkeling packages. No equipment? No problem. The resort has plenty of equipment to rent. In addition you’ll find more than enough marine life and fascinating geological formations to satisfy your curiosity.

One more hot spot is the Cookie House. Each cottage provides a 180 degree ocean view, and it‘s located next to the Cookie House Restaurant. Scooters are available to get around the island.

Other historical sites include an Arawak cave, found at Columbus point, and plantation ruins, left over from the islands efforts at joining the worlds cotton growers. Deveaux Mansion was eight times the residence of Andrew Deveaux of the US Navy, who participated in the 1873 battles to get Nassau back from Italy. Another widely known ruins is the remains of the Ambrister plantation, near Port Howe.

Cat Island is the sixth largest island in the Bahamas, and boasts virtually undisturbed beaches, where swimming and relaxing can be done in near complete privacy.

One of the most fun parts of any family vacation is the food. Hawk’s Nest Resort and Marina serves a variety of dishes, but among the best are the fresh, grilled fish and the roasted rack of lamb. If you want to eat like the locals, check out Fernandez Bay Village. Here you also have the option of dining patio side by the beach. After your water adventures trek back to Greenwood Beach Resort and sample their breads, which are baked every day. You’re on vacation, so don’t fret over carbs!

Cat Island is an excellent family trip deal for it’s natural beach experience, and laid-back atmosphere. Because it is so much smaller in population than some of the other islands, it’s easier to get a real feel for the people and their way of life.

10 Things you Must Know When Camping in Bear Country

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

It goes without saying that there are risks when it comes to camping in bear country. You can never be too careful or too safe.

Campgrounds are now having to incorporate policies and procedures to ensure bear conservation and safety for campers. The DEC Campgrounds in the Adirondack and Catskill Forest Preserves in New York State are two such campgrounds. Their staff have developed specific policies and procedures to minimize the occurrence of bear problems at their campgrounds while maintaining a healthy, natural black bear population. Here are eight important ways that you can minimize the chances of getting hurt by bears:

1. Avoid traditional bear feeding areas.

2. Avoid camp locations where bears have been known to roam in the past.

3. Avoid camping where you may have trouble seeing a bear through vegetation.

4. Avoid camping where you see bear droppings and fresh tracks.

5. Never feed wild bears.

6. Store your food in a cooler which is locked in the car

7. Like most animals, bears are attracted to garbage so make sure your campsite is very clean

8. Remember that behind every cute baby bear is a very overprotective mama bear!

9. Stop fishing when bears are present. They want your fish more than you do.

10. The minimum safe distance from a bear is 50-100 yards.

There are now a number of organizations that are working passionately on increasing bear awareness in the community. The National Spokesman of The National Be Bear Aware & Wildlife Stewardship Campaign, General H Norman Schwarzkopf, is dedicated to providing teachers, college students, youth groups and guiding/hunting groups with educational materials and training programs to teach outdoor enthusiasts and residents up to date safety skills and techniques for camping, hunting, viewing, hiking, photographing and living with wildlife like bears safely and responsibly. More information is available at the Campaign’s website at http://www.bebearawaresw.org.

Along a similar vein, The ‘Bear Safe Washington’ program began in 1999 with funding from the World Society for the Protection of Animals. This program of presentations, brochures and seminars was designed to raise awareness of all bear issues in Washington State. Its bear safe guide can be downloaded at http://www.insightwildlife.com/bearsafe.htm

The Get Bear Smart Society based in Whistler, Canada, educates people on dealing with bears in the community and promoting innovative bear management practices. Supporters can make donations by visiting their website at http://www.bearsmart.com.

Things to do in Idaho

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

idaho-flagWhen most people think Idaho, they think about potatoes. Idaho is a big state, with Washington and Oregon in the Pacific Northwest as it‘s neighbors. Idaho covers two time zones, runs from Canada to Nevada, and includes the western side of the continental divide of the Rocky Mountains. It’s landscape is peppered with rivers, mountains and farmland. Since most don’t know much about Idaho you’re probably wondering what is there to do there? You’ve got questions and I’ve got answers.

ATV riding, ballooning, boating, camping, guided trips, para gliding, hiking, horseback riding, Nordic skiing, rafting and kayaking, rock climbing, sledding, snowcat skiing, wagon rides and more wildlife to view than you ever thought.

Add to this all the amusement parks, casinos, the ghost towns, golf courses, ranches, hot springs, natural museums, resorts, shopping and trail rides and you have plenty to do in Idaho.

Some of the best things in life are free and once you get to Idaho, here’s a family fun festival that’s free. The town of Pierce is gearing up for it’s 1860 Days celebration. The theme for this huge event is Pierce’s “Golden Past-Our Gateway to a Sparkling Future”. Capture a bit of the old west by attending at shoot-out in the street complete with bad guys. What’s a celebration without a parade down Main Street? Festivals also mean food and lots of it. Munch on some treats from the Dutch-Oven Cook-Off and the Huckleberry Bake-Off and the Pie Social. Feeling gutsy? Try your skills at jalapeno, watermelon and pie-eating contests, and dress up 1860s style and win a ribbon for your best costume. If you’re not too tuckered out after that sign up for a softball tournament, or the Ducky Derby. The kids can fish or play games in the park. The Kingpins will be playing for the Saturday night street dance, and other bands will be playing during the days. The dates are 8/1/2009 - 8/2/2009. Don’t forget it’s FREE!!!

The third Weekend in August is I.C.A.’s Wild Weippe Rodeo. Fees: $6.00 Adults, $3.00 6-12, Free under 6.

5 Romantic Travel Resolutions

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

white-romantic-coupleSometimes Mom and Dad need a little alone time. Nothing against traveling with the kids, or other family members, we just need some alone time. So parents to make the most of your treasured time together here’s where to start. Begin by making some travel resolutions together, regardless of your time and budget restraints. Put aside those old travel habits and make some new ones! Too often it’s the wife that makes the plans. And yes, we do any excellent job, we’d like a bit more input. “Whatever you want”, isn’t always the best answer. Let this be the year that your travel designs focus on fun, fantasy, and festivities!

(1) Plan a real vacation. No, it doesn’t have to be an around the world cruise or first class getaway (but if you can afford it, what are you waiting for?) It does have to be an honest-to-goodness vacation, though. No cell phones, no laptops. Mark the dates on the calendar and keep it like you’d keep any business appointment. Planning romantic travel, though, is a fun activity and one that can take months to plan. Consider this stage part of the adventure.

(2) Involve each other in the trip planning. If one partner does all the planning … that task quickly becomes a bore. Plan your trips together! Remember anticipation is half the fun. Visit a travel agent. Collect brochures. Buy a guidebook. Rent a video about your destination. Search the web for information. Get into the spirit!

(3) Do something you’ve rarely or never done. Here you can be as mild — or as wild — as you dare. Go whitewater rafting. Rent a houseboat. Take a hot air balloon ride. Spend the night in a local bed and breakfast. Learn to scuba dive. Dance the whole night away under the stars. The choice is yours.

(4) Make it a habit. Now here is where you do have to be realistic in regards to budget and family obligations. How about a mini-vacation every couple of months. Whether it’s for the night or for the night out, get into the routine of just the two of you getting away. The only rule: you must pretend you are on vacation. Book a night at a local bed and breakfast. Call your local hotel and find out their non-peak nights (in business-oriented cities, it’s usually Friday and Saturday) then plan a short romantic getaway.

(5) Get creative. This is the think outside the box option. Check out festivals and other special events. Special events take place in about every community around the world. Whatever your interests — from square dancing to sandcastle building — you’ll find a festival celebrating with a day or one of fun and food. If you don’t have the time or budget to go far, contact area chamber of commerce or tourism offices within a day’s drive of your home for their calendar of events. If you can, extend your trip into a long weekend. If you have got the time and resources, check out the biggies: Carnival, Mardi Gras, and Rio’s Carnivale. Don’t forget your costume and your sunscreen. Don’t worry about the kids but don’t forget to have some fun things for them to do while you’re away.

5 Top Must See Countries

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

passport

We are indeed creatures of habit. Which means we don’t venture too far from our previous experiences, travel or otherwise. If we have family out of state we tend to make repeated trips to see them, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s great to visit family. However, there’s a big world out there waiting for us to come and take a look. Get the best of both worlds and ask your extended family to come along for the ride. Check out the top five must see countries.

  1. Egypt. King Tut, The Pyramids, The Valley of the Kings. The list is endless. But it’s just not the history and the culture, it’s the people too. Egyptians are some of the kindest and most generous people on the planet. They will welcome you into their homes in a second and even if they have almost nothing, they will share it with you. An afternoon on the Nile with an Egyptian felucca captain sailing your boat as the sun sets over the Nile in Luxor is a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed.
  2. China. China isn’t somewhere people immediately think of when planning a vacation…but they should. If you watched the Olympics in Beijing, you got a glimpse of a beautiful country. Even if you could only afford 7 to 10 days, an itinerary that takes in Beijing, Xian, a Yangtze River Cruise and Shanghai will be a great introduction. And for an unforgettable experience, juts visit Guilin. Guilins landscape is amazing and totally unique. Mountainous might not be the best description, but the peaks that do rise, rise almost vertically up into the mist. If you get a chance take a ski lift up to one of the peaks and just take in the view, and if you are feeling adventurous, take a kart down a toboggan style run (about 3,000 feet in length)!
  3. Jordan. Handily located, if you plan it right you can visit Egypt and Jordan together to make a real trip to remember. Amman is a great city full of atmosphere, Petra is marvelous, but surely the can’t miss site is the Dead Sea. The only ocean in the world with so much salt in it, you actually float! This alone makes Jordan a must see country. In addition, don’t forget the Wadi Rum, Aqaba, Jerash and the Kings Highway. A week in Jordan is good, but 10 days is better.
  4. Hong Kong. Although there is much more to Hong Kong than just shopping, if you do love to shop, then Hong Kong is the place for you. A stroll along Nathan Road and a visit to the Temple Street market just HAS to be on your itinerary. And make sure you have your bargaining hat on as haggling is as big a part of the experience as the purchases themselves. The great thing is that despite it being a modern city, there is tradition around every corner. Don’t forget to take a trip to Victoria Peak and enjoy the stunning views and remember that even if it’s misty, there are 2 guys at the top who will take your picture and transpose it onto a picture of what you should see if the weather where not so poor ! I also suggest a couple of half day visits out to Lama and Lantau Islands too. A great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the craziness that is typical of Hong Kong.
  5. Thailand. Thailand suffers a little from its reputation of being a very hedonistic destination and while it is true that there is a very wild side to Thailand (especially certain areas of Bangkok, Phucket etc) there is also an amazing culture to immerse yourself in. There really is everything there, adventure, culture and even for the not faint hearted, a place about 1 hour north of Thailand where you can go in, yes go in, with real live tigers. No cages, no chains, just you and around a dozen tigers. Despite the tsunami of 2004 it’s still a beautiful place.

Women’s Travel Guide for Safety

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

mom-and-baby-on-planeA family trip isn’t necessarily mom, dad and the kids. Maybe the genders have decided to take separate and different vacations. Whatever works for your family is great and you’ll still want to look for the best deals in transportation, lodging, and entertainment. The other consideration is safety. Every woman should have some type of travel guide for safety. Whether it’s for business or pleasure, you will see that more and more women are now traveling all over the world. Although this may seem like a good thing, you have to remember that if you travel to other parts of the world, women are sometimes viewed as weak and unable to defend themselves. This is why, safety first should always be at the top of your agenda.

So, here are some tips that women can use in order to have an enjoyable and much safer trip whenever traveling abroad.

First of all, always do your research on the country you plan on traveling to. Remember that not all countries are the same in regards to culture and tradition. Some countries are culturally conservative and will have dress codes that everyone should follow. Always familiarize yourself on the laws and customs of the place you wish to go to. Remember that ignorance of the law excuses no one even if you are a tourist.

Despite the state of our global relations some US citizens still take trips to Saudi Arabia; for pleasure and for business. If you travel there, you have to remember that tourists here and even women may be detained by the police for improper dresses. You may want to make a statement, but keep in mind that what may be casual wear for you may be seen as provocative or inappropriate in other countries. You can never go wrong with jeans and a t-shirt that covers most of your body. Also, these clothes are better option than skirts if you need to run or defend yourself. Islamic nations tend to be very conservative especially in regards to women. In fact, in some countries, it’s even illegal to invite people of the opposite sex in your hotel room. And, only married couples are allowed to stay in the same hotel room.

Whenever traveling, it is always a good idea to try and blend in with the public. Try buying a local dress and wear it to give other people the impression that you are a local and are familiar with the country.

To feel more secure whenever you are traveling around the country, consider carrying safety devices. Nothing outlandish or dangerous. The most readily available would be pepper spray. Many people consider self-defense spray to be an essential personal security need, therefore, the US DOT has made an allowance for their carriage in checked luggage. Whether you are a security consultant or a private citizen, you may bring ONE small self-defense spray with you when you travel by air. For more information on traveling with self-defense spray see DOT regulations, 49 CFR §175.10(a)(9). Before you pack a self-defense spray ensure that all of the following criteria are met:

You may NOT travel with:

  • Do not bring more than one self-defense spray (see 49 CFR §171.8);
  • Be sure it does not exceed 118 mL (4 fluid ounces);
  • Ensure that the device incorporates a positive means to prevent accidental discharge (e.g., a safety latch or cap); and
  • Pack the self-defense spray in checked baggage only in a manner that will prevent damage or inadvertent release (e.g., pack in a protective case, ensure it is protected from other items in your baggage that may crush or damage it, pack it in a manner that protects it in case the checked baggage is dropped or damaged during handling).

In case you’re not familiar with it’s effects, pepper spray will temporarily blind a person and also disable them for 5 to 6 minutes, which is enough for you to run away and get help.

Whenever traveling in unfamiliar surroundings, always be alert. Never carry your wallet in your back pockets. You have to remember that some places are notorious for pickpockets and there are even places where children working with adults can slash your pants with a blade and get the contents of that pocket. Fanny packs may not be fashionable but they’re a safe way to carry cash as are belts that have pouches for cash or other valuables. You can be cute when you get home, safety first.

Always plan ahead for a safe and enjoyable vacation.

Skiing in Oregon

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

mthood_gladetrail2escOregon is famous for the ski slopes found around the state, and if you are planning a ski vacation, you should definitely consider Timberline Lodge, located near Mt. Hood in Oregon. There is quite a bit of history in the area, starting with the lodge that was built during the Great Depression by a master craftsman. The Timberline Lodge also has a bit of more recent history attached to it. Part of the movie, The Shining, was filmed here. Many of the ‘outside’ shots were done at Timberline Lodge.

The lodge is entirely hand made, and well preserved. The hand woven draperies and the hand hewn beams add to the rustic charm and history of the place. The lodge sits in the middle of 1400 acres consisting of 35 trails. The trails are perfect for beginners, intermediates, and experts. The top elevation at Timberline Lodge is 8504 with a vertical drop of 2501. There are six chair lifts to accommodate skiers.

Before you think I’m off my rocker suggesting ski vacations at the beginning of summer there’s something you should know. One of the most unique things about Timberline is that it’s the one place in the United States that offers year-round snow skiing. Palmer Snowfield is part of the Timberline Resort, and it’s permanently covered with snow. Be advised that beginners are’nt always allowed on Palmer snowfield – the conditions are considered each day when making the determination.

Skiing, snowboarding, hiking, snowshoeing, and lodge tours are the main attractions at Timberline. Here, it is all about the powder! Mt. Hood is an active volcano which is considered to be dormant. Occasionally, tremors are felt, and steam vents are often visible. The Cascade Dining Room is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day, but the hours do change with the seasons. Other fare can be found at the Ram’s Head Bar, the Blue Ox bar, the Wy’East
Kitchen Cafeteria, the Market Café, and the Mt. Hood Brewing Company.

The downside is that rental equipment isn’t available at Timberline. You must bring your own. However, smaller items such as gloves and goggles can be purchased at the lodge, along with some clothing items. There is a snowboard and ski school on the premises, with private and group lessons are available.

If the idea of a ‘rustic’ ski vacation appeals to you, as opposed to trips with accommodations that are a bit fancier, then Timberline Lodge in Oregon is the place to be. Again, it’s definitely all about the history and the powder here. However, whether you ski or not, you must’nt miss the Magic Mile, which offers a panoramic view of the Cascade mountains that cannot be matched. How’s that for a family getaway!

A Deep Sea Fishing Family Guide

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

deep-sea-fishing

Deep sea fishing is a fun activity that a lot of families enjoy. It’s something that can give you and your family a great getaway experience and priceless memories that can last for a lifetime. The family bonding experience, plus being out in nature at is simply indescribable. Consider it a big adventure for you and your family. However, if you’re new to this sporty past time, there are some things you should know before you set out on your deep sea fishing trip. Other than not forgetting to bring your camera, for those bragging snapshots, here are some things that you have to think about before even making some plans.

Judgment Time: Are They Capable?

First off, take a realistic look at your family’s abilities and age. If you’re deciding on what kind of excursion to have, spend a little time thinking about the age of your children. Let’s face it, you can’t really maximize a deep sea fishing trip if you’re kids are still infants or toddlers. If your plan is to use the services of a charter boat, this would play an important factor too, since most boat companies have set age limits. Generally, the minimum age is eight years old. Please understand that companies set these kinds of rules to guarantee everyone’s safety. In addition, consider how long you’ll want to be on water. Most inexperienced fishermen usually prefer half-day trips, to minimize stress, and keep the trip enjoyable for the whole family. On the other hand, lifelong and expert anglers would definitely want to have overnight trips. However, regardless of the length of your fishing experience, remember that your family’s physical comfort can and will affect the overall enjoyment of the trip. Also factor in attitudes and age; they play important roles in how can your family adjusts to temporary boat life.

Be Distance Conscious

Another important consideration is how far away your target fishing location is from your home. Available packages can vary greatly, depending on the company. This means the provisions that they’ll give to you on the boat would also differ. If you will be traveling a great distance just to fish, you might be more interested in packages that are all inclusive, which provides you with everything you’d need for the trip. However, packages like these are usually hard to find, and of course, they are way more expensive than those the average day trip packages. With an average package you pretty much get bait and tackle. If you’re in need of a license, some packages already include it, while some charge you extra.

Know The Terms

Plan on bringing your own hats, sunglasses, clothing, sun block, medications for motion sickness and everything else that you think is important to bring. It’s a good idea for the family to dress in warm layers, since it may be colder when you’re on water than being on shore. Also, most of the day trip packages require you to bring your own food. If this is the case, you should plan accordingly. Try to pack items that are easy on your stomach, just in case the waters are rough. And please pack some toys or waterproof portable electronics to occupy the kids when the lure of fishing wears off. Get it, lure of fishing? Never mind.

6 Reasons why Cruises are Budget Friendly

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

cruise-ship2

A cruise ship provides a great one price vacation. One of the main attractions in booking a cruise is that just about everything is included in the price. When many people think about a budget vacation, they picture an intrepid traveler in a roach infested hotel room eating stale sandwiches and riding around on the city bus. However, one of the best ways to save money on a vacation is also one of the most luxurious and most thrilling – a cruise.

Budget Friendly Accommodations, and the Food

In addition to a cheap place to stay, a cruise also offers unlimited food, including many amazing buffets that are open 24 hours a day, everyday. In addition, cruise lines often employ some of the best chefs in the world. What’s not to love about quality food, expertly prepared and included in the total price of your vacation?

Traveling Off-season

Of course, it’s possible to save even more money by traveling in the off-season. If this fits your schedule this can often be a great plan. For instance, in the middle of the winter, most people are not thinking about vacations. However, it’s warm and tempting in many tropical cruise ship destinations. Before you pack your sunscreen, check out the local weather, you’ll want to make sure you’re avoiding the rainy season in the destination you’re considering. Hurricanes, tropical downpours and other weather problems will no doubt ruin the most luxurious and budget friendly vacation.

Cabin Fever

If you have never cruised before, it’s a good idea to talk some folks with a bit of cruise experience under their belts. They can give valuable insight on the best balance of cost and comfort for your first cruise ship experience. And you may see that faraway look in their eyes that means they’re reliving some great memories and ready to go again. Cabin location is another important consideration when booking a cruise. The interior cabins on the lower parts of the ship are generally the least costly, while the higher, larger cabins with ocean views and balconies are the most expensive.

Discounts and Cheap Cruise Deals

Of course it’s not always necessary to shop early. Cruise lines have been known to offer some fantastic last minute discounts in order to move unsold cabins and avoid leaving with a less than full passenger load. Check online for last minute travel newsletters that provide details on these type of deals. These last minute travel deals are a big hit with retirees and others with the time to see the world.

Food and Fitness

After eating all that food, you will probably feel the need to work out, and most cruise ships also include unlimited use of the gym in the cost. Some ships also offer sports options, like golf, basketball, and multiple swimming pools. While many hotels tack on a surcharge for the use of the hotel gym, with a cruise vacation it is generally included. If spa services are available you will have to pay extra for them.

Shipboard Entertainment

The cost of a cruise also includes all shipboard entertainment and classes. The entertainment options of a cruise vacation are often one of the best parts of the experience. You can choose from movie nights, theatres, nightclubs, discos, casinos (bring extra cash for this), Broadway type shows and even guest talent shows. These are a hoot! And if you decide to take part in a talent show and sing off key, remember the chances of you seeing these people again are slim and none. Some of the classes offered range from origami to bridge to ballroom dancing. And again, these options are included in the cost.

Not Included

Among the only things that are not included in the typical cruise vacation are alcoholic beverages and shore excursions. If you’re traveling to the Caribbean, alcohol prices are dirt cheap. But please ask about custom restrictions before you stock up for your home bar. Since 911 many rules have changed about what you can bring back. As for shore excursions, you can check these out online before you set sail. This way you won’t be blindsided by the cost of the excursion or any extra rentals fees associated with them. One way to save money on shore excursions is by booking the tours locally at portside instead of going through the cruise line. Just be sure, however that the book it yourself excursion will get you back to the ship on time.

I hope those are enough reasons for you to at least taking the family on a cruise vacation. It really can be among the best, and most economical, of all vacation opportunities. The ability to enjoy a week or two week at sea, at one low price is one more reason to love cruising. Check out the links below for their deals and to sign up for their newsletters.

Who doesn’t want a bargain these days? And if your destination is Disney World why not take advantage of free things to do while you’re there. Pack your bags family, you’re on your way to Disney World!

1. Visit Downtown Disney.

It cost nothing to visit Downtown Disney. There are lots of fun shops to stroll through and plenty of people watching opportunities. (If you visit during the day PLEASE take a hat. I think Downtown Disney has its own micro climate - it often seems degrees hotter than the rest of Orlando.) Don’t miss the snoozing man made from legos or the fantastic magnets at Magnetron Magnets. Stop in the Art of Disney store - They run a trivia quiz every day and give out prizes if you get them all right!

2. Watch the Magic Kingdom Fireworks.

From the beach of the Grand Floridian or Polynesian. You can park at the resorts for a short time for free. Tell the guard you are visiting the hotel coffee shop.

3. ake a free tour of Wilderness Lodge.

Check with guest services for times and details. There is also a hidden Mickey hunt (list available from guest services)

4. Watch the Electrical Water Pageant.

The Pageant takes place each night on Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake - times vary. A long line of barges are transformed into a magical light show. It is short - just a few minutes long but is one of the overlooked treasures of Walt Disney World. It can be seen from the beaches of the Grand Floridian and Polynesian and the Fort Wilderness Marina and Beach.

5. Nature Trails at Fort Wilderness.

There are many miles of trails at Fort Wilderness, through pine and cypress woods. All free. You can hire bikes but to walk costs nothing.

6. Visit The Boardwalk.

How to Spend Less Money On Your Vacation

It is quite possible to spend less money on that much-needed vacation. And unless you have tons of time, flying is the best option. The best way to spend less money is to find the best airfare deals in the market. That way you can have more money for accommodations, souvenirs, tours, and of course, food. If tightened economical times are forcing funds to be limited, or if you just want to get an A in frugality, check out some ways to pare down on airline tickets to make it worth your while.

Go For Multi Offers

Keep in mind that travel is a major industry and competition is fierce for those in the business. To cut costs, look for vacation packages that include discount prices on hotel, round-trip airfare, and car rental. Some travel companies bundle these services all and sell them at a discounted price. Always look for package.

Cheap Tickets

You don’t have to travel first-class to have a comfortable flight and a fun vacation. Fly economy and spend less money. Don’t expect extra leg room, nice fluffy pillows or complimentary drinks. Save all that good stuff for your destination. However, crying babies are included.

Advance Booking For Fixed Rates

Book your flights as far in advance as you can; especially if you’re traveling around holiday time. Weekends sometimes have a larger price tag than midweek. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are when airlines try to fill unbooked seats so the prices may be cheaper.

Look For Cheap Airfare Tickets On The Web

Booking portals are one of the most inexpensive ways to book travel, and find bundle deals. Orbit, Travelocity, Expedia and Cheap Tickets are just a few. Some will match prices. http://www.sidestep.com is a great place to find side by comparisons on airfare in a single search. Trust me this will save you lots of time and frustration.

Try to check out different flight schedules to determine the lowest rates possible. In most cases, flights during the evening or early in the morning tend to be cheaper. There might be limited seats under this category but it’s worth a try since they are mostly offered at a discounted price. Just make sure you do your research to get the best airfare deals in the market for a vacation that is easy on your budget and relatively stress free.

Finding the Best Summer Camp

summer-camp

Ever thought of the kids going one way for vacation and you going the other? I’m not saying you want to get rid of them, but Mom and Dad deserve some free time. It’s also a pretty safe bet that your kids may need a break from you as well.

The solution may be an adventure summer camp. The purpose of any adventure summer camp is to send children to a place where they will not only have a great time but will learn and grow as a person. Adventure summer camp programs should offer a wide range of exploratory activities to choose from. If the summer camp is a specialty camp, then their programs must focus on those specialty areas. For example, baseball camp should include things like batting, catching, defense, running bases, etc. Even though these summer camps are specialty focused the kids should have a good and challenging time.

What Else to Look for

Some of the camps will target certain age groups but share some basic formats. Outdoor activities, day trips, and evening entertainment are pretty standard and will likely be fun for most kids. On the other hand, teen’s summer camps focus on things that are important to teens like growing up and learning about real life and gaining a sense of independence. I remember being a Camp Fire girl and longing to go away to camp to roast marshmallows over an open flame. Sadly, it never happened.

A Rose by Any Other Name

Programs are essentially free to call themselves whatever they want, which can be a tad confusing for parents. Be on the lookout for programs without clear features. These are often use phrases or descriptions like outdoor behavior programs, boot camps, wilderness camps, wilderness programs or ‘wilderness boot camps. Behavior Outdoor Intervention curricula have become increasingly popular for the past few years. So don’t go with these catchy words, know in detail what they actually offer before you make any payment and ship your child off.

Parents searching for an “unrealistic quick fix” to their youngsters behaviors, particularly over the summer months, generally prefer and hunt for programs that address these concerns. Please make sure you know what you and your child are getting into if this is your choice. And do you really want to roll discipline and your child’s vacation into an all in one package? Whether you go for boot camps, sports excellence or wilderness camps, make sure that the summer camp activities are clearly displayed and you understand them properly to choose the best one form the options. Most importantly, make sure the ration of counselors to kids is adequate and ask for credentials. This sounds corny as all get out, but our children are our future and you want them cared for properly.

Most YMCA’s have camps and they’re reputable. Also check out

Saving Money With a Bareboat Charter

Are you game to take charge?

Bareboat yacht charters without an experienced captain means, that you do need to have sailing experience. In order to find out if you are qualified to handle the bareboat yacht on your own, the charter company requires that you submit a resume of your sailing experience. With many of the bareboat sailing companies you don’t need to have a sailing certificate because they place more value on the experience. With others, you do need to have a certificate. A quick surf of the net and you’ll find bareboat yacht charters online in all parts of the world. If this is something that piques your interest make sure you do your research to see which ones are best for you.

When you submit your record of sailing experience for bareboat sailing, charter companies will let you know whether or not they feel you can handle the yacht on your own. Naturally bareboat yacht charters have to protect their investments as well as your safety. If they do not feel your qualifications are up to par for sailing the specific waters they service, you may be required to have one of their experienced captains on board. And yes the price will go up.

The reason these yachts are called bareboats is that they do not contain any of the luxuries you would find on other types of yacht charters. Bareboat sailing charters mean that you charter the yacht itself. There are no supplies included. You will have to bring your own food and entertainment items, don’t expect to find microwaves or televisions on these yachts. Bareboat yacht charters are mainly designed for those who want to enjoy the sailing experience and the thrill of being on the open water. Similar to a houseboat, but not quite.

Another advantage is that you can dock in many small locations where larger ships cannot enter. This gives you a chance to see more locations and experience the flavor of the locals. Bareboat yacht charters are very popular ways to see the islands of the Caribbean and the Bahamas as well as Hawaii, Greece, the French Riviera and many other parts of the world. Alaska bareboat sailing charters will take you to the great glaciers of the world as well as give you the opportunity to see many species of wildlife in their natural habitats. Right about now you’re probably thinking, “The French Riviera on my budget?” Never say never. If you bone up on this now, when the time and finances are right, you’ll be one step ahead of the game.

Bareboat yacht charters usually have several itineraries for you to choose from. However, you can make changes. Just let the yacht charter company know where you want to go. The company will provide you with all the navigation charts you need as well as the equipment you need to keep in contact with shore. There are GPS plotters on the bareboat yachts, VHF radios and other safety equipment to ensure you have the prefect sailing vacation. Bareboat yacht charters allow you to see the part of the world you want to, and at your own pace.
