New Airline - Skybus

Skybus announces its first cities with fares from $10 O/W*

by Jessica Labrencis, SmarterTravel.com Staff - 04/24/07 at 1:18 pm ET

New low-fare carrier Skybus has announced its first round of destinations, and is offering introductory fares from $10 one-way. The airline is based out of Columbus, OH, and its destinations will include Burbank, Kansas City, Oakland, Richmond, and Portsmouth.

, , , , , , , , , ,

Skybus says that at least 10 of these $10 one-way fares are available on every flight, so if you act fast, you may be able to snag one. In my initial searches, I was able to find $10 fares for every route I checked. With taxes and fees, one-way flights totaled between $16 and $20, and round-trip fares totaled between $36 and $41.

Though it hasn’t started flying yet, Skybus seems to be taking cues from Ireland-based Ryanair, and will charge for “amenities” such as checked baggage and priority boarding, as well as onboard food and beverages. Like Southwest, Skybus doesn’t assign seats, but unlike Southwest, Skybus will charge for “A” group seats.

The route map on Skybus’ homepage is a little misleading because it advertises flights to Los Angeles, Boston, Seattle, and San Francisco, when in fact it serves the nearby cities of Burbank; Portsmouth, NH; Bellingham, WA; and Oakland.

The deal

Burbank, Kansas City, and Portsmouth service begins May 22; Richmond service begins May 23; Bellingham, Ft. Lauderdale, and Greensboro service begins May 29; and Oakland service begins June 12. Flights are valid through December 15. Skybus has not listed a booking deadline.

Sample one-way fares to/from Columbus, not including additional taxes and fees, are:

  • $10 to/from Bellingham
  • $10 to/from Burbank
  • $10 to/from Ft. Lauderdale
  • $10 to/from Greensboro
  • $10 to/from Kansas City
  • $10 to/from Oakland
  • $10 to/from Portsmouth
  • $10 to/from Richmond

All prices, dates, and booking details listed here were valid at the time of publication. Some information may have changed since that time.

Find airfares

You can use our price-comparison tool to check for the lowest airfares from multiple travel providers, or go directly to Skybus’ website.

Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights or dates. Be flexible with your travel dates to find the lowest fares. Blackout dates and additional restrictions may apply.

The Grand Canyon

grand.jpg

Eighteen miles wide at its widest point, 277 miles long, and more than a mile deep at its deepest, the Grand Canyon has long astonished visitors with its dramatic views and stunning rock formations. The first Europeans to visit the canyon came in 1540, in an expedition led by Spanish explorer Francisco Coronado. American explorer John Wesley Powell led the first expedition down the Colorado River through the canyon in 1869. Grand Canyon National Park, created in 1919, now plays host to more than 5 million visitors each year.

Catskill Mountains, New York

catskill-mountains-new-york.jpg

In the 1800s, the peaceful beauty of the Catskills inspired writers and painters. In turn, books and paintings inspired people to visit the area. The first major hotel built in the Catskills was the Catskill Mountain House, in 1823. In the early part of the 20th century, the town of Woodstock was home to numerous artists, writers, and musicians. Later, in the 1920s, the Catskills became a popular Jewish retreat. Among the attractions were luxurious resorts that showcased up-and-coming comedians and musicians.

Saratoga Springs, New York

saratoga-waterfalls.jpg

This beautiful town in upstate New York is best known for its horse racing track. But over four hundred years ago, French explorers traveled here to find the area’s mineral springs and geysers. They had heard that the water flowing from these sources could heal the sick. By the late 1800’s, Saratoga had become the vacation spot of choice for America’s rich and powerful, who came to drink and bathe in the springs. Today, Saratoga Springs is celebrated as a center for the arts, for its historic old homes, and, of course, for some of the best horse racing in the world.

Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

In 1835, Jeremiah Pease invited 30 friends to a place called Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard for a religious revival. Twenty years later, 12,000 people were coming every year to spend the summer. Edgartown was renamed Cottage City in 1880, then Oak Bluffs in 1907. By the 1930s, many wealthy African American families were buying land in Oak Bluffs, which soon became known as an exclusive vacation spot for African Americans. Today, filmmaker Spike Lee owns Oak Bluffs property. And high-profilers like Vernon Jordan and former U.S. secretary of health and human services, Dr. Louis Sullivan, vacation there.

More Travel Tips

Monday, April 16th, 2007

There is a great article HERE on traveling with children. Here is the gist of it!

crazy-children.jpg

Here are a couple of my crazy children on a road trip. Makes you sorta want to read some travel tips, doesn’t it??

What To Pack

It goes without saying that you’ll want to be technically prepared. In other words, have extra diapers, wipes, and first aid items in the glove compartment at all times.

Get yourself a fanny pack so your hands are always available for your children when you’ve stepped out of the car for any period of time.

Pack your monitor so that, while in a different home or location, you can keep tabs on your kids while they sleep.

Try to use transparent bags for packing small items for your kids. This makes them much easier to find when living out of a suitcase for a few days.

Be sure to bring along comfort items for each child with which they are familiar - a blanket, a pillow, a stuffed friend.

Always have at least one change of clothes available in the car so that spills and accidents don t have to create a panic situation for you. With that, make sure you always have plenty of plastic grocery bags packed in which you can store such messes until you can launder them.

It’s always a good idea to have a travel bag just for them, too, but don’t let them see it, otherwise they’ll want everything in it all at once. (Can you tell I’ve been down this road before? Pardon the pun.) In the bag, you can have stocked a plethora of silly things that will keep them occupied. If they are old enough to look at a map, and they recognize letters or numbers, try highlighting some cities through which you’ll be traveling, asking them to find them on the map as you go through them, then have a brown lunch bag with the city’s name on it with some kind of little treat inside. Then they get the bag when they get to the city! In the bag can be a small toy or a little snack. This will teach them a little about map-reading, keep them occupied, and also give them something fun to anticipate.

If your children are not quite to that age yet, there are plenty of other things to bring. Try a roll of duct tape. No, not for putting over their mouths! Shame on those of you who thought that’s where I was going with this. I mean for some fun time. Cut pieces of it for them. I don t know what it is about tape, but kids love to play with it. And hey, if it lands over their mouths, so be it. (Just kidding!)

Another good thing to pack is a small hand mirror with a protective covering or case. Mirrors are great fun for kids. You might consider a hand-held calculator, too. Kids seem to love pushing buttons, don’t they?

Bring along a few tapes with kids songs that you know they enjoy. Singing is always a fun way to pass the time during a long trip.

Place a box between or next to their seats that contains some little gadgets for play. If your children are prone to carsickness, books might not be the best idea. But little toys and fun things can be shared and passed back and forth. You might try making some kind of compartmentalized bag that you can hook over the backs of your seats so they can reach in and grab their little possessions, too.

For potty breaks (which should be accommodated often when traveling with kids) have a bottle of bubbles or a Frisbee packed for some outdoor fun. Kids have so much energy, and it s important that they expend some of it during these breaks.

If possible, change seating a bit periodically, if there s room. Mom can sit in the back for just a bit and the kids will love it! Or, if Mom drives for a while, Dad can join in the fun and help pass the time in the back of the car or van.

Dining Out With The Kids

When stopping along the travel route, try to stop at restaurants that have a play area where children can expend some of their energy.

Once you’re there, when eating out with kids, call ahead and ask if the restaurant has equipment such as highchairs, booster seats, etc. You will want to ask about a kids menu as well.

Take along toys or books to the restaurant for a diversion if there is a long wait. Realize that you or your spouse may have to take the child out during dinner a few times; sitting still is difficult for young children.

More ideas concerning your accommodations:

When taking children camping, be sure to take a first-aid kit. Include bug repellent and anti-itch ointment for poison ivy or bug bites. Make sure that you have an alternate plan, a hotel nearby may be necessary if the weather turns ugly or your child just has enough of the great outdoors.

When staying in a hotel or motel, you will want to call ahead to see if they have necessary equipment for rent - cribs, roll-away beds, play pens, etc. Upon arrival, check with the concierge s desk about children s activities and possibly baby-sitting.

Make sure that your room is safe for your children. Check balcony doors and make sure that they are locked. Check the windows to be sure they cannot be easily opened or there are no dangling cords from blinds or draperies. Check all of the outlets, you may want to bring some outlet covers with you to use during your stay.

Staying at a family-friendly resort is a wonderful option. Everything there is geared toward families with children. Activities are planned for the children usually allowing Mom and Dad some quiet time.

When staying with family or friends in their home, be sure that any baby equipment that they may have on hand for your child to use is up to current safety standards. The bars on a crib should be no more that 2 3/8 in. apart. Call ahead and ask them to please place any breakable items in a high place. Again check outlets and any windows or doors that may be accessible to your child.

Be realistic about your itinerary. If you plan too many activities in a short period of time, your child is likely to make you pay for it. Becoming over tired makes children irritable and even more likely to have tantrums. Everyone will have a better time if you take it slow and have plenty of time for relaxation and rest.

Water of the Gods

Norris Hot Springs

Norris Hot Springs in Norris, Montana is a great place to soak and relax at the end of a long day. A few weeks ago I went there without kids, but I think it’d be a great place to take kids as long as you hit it earlier in the day…That is to say, before the college kids get there and start drinking like little fishies! ;)

Their website, norrishotsprings.com, gives a lot of great information on where they are located and places to camp and lodge nearby. My favorite part of is was that there was a great variety of people there and the food is reasonably priced. It’s near Bozeman, Montana, which of course has a lot of entertainment as well. Bozeman is the home of The Museum of the Rockies (which I mentioned in a previous post HERE), Montana State University, and the ever popular Bridger Bowl, for those who LOVE to ski.

Norris is very rustic. Don’t expect a flushing toilet (port-a-potties are on site, however) or real doors on the dressing rooms. No locking lockers either. They do have a sign up warning you that thieving from others brings on bad Karma, however. ;)

Pack up the kids and take a trip to Norris, folks. At $5 a head, the price can’t be beat! Oh, more advice: Call ahead (406-685-3303) to see if they will have live Bluegrass music on the day you want to go. It’s the best!

Happy travels!
